happy *mumble* *mumble* leap year

It’s probably a good thing that it only comes once every four years, because the 29th of February is just one February day too many. Add to that the seven-hundredth snowfall so far this year and it all seems like a cruel reminder that, no, winter isn’t anywhere near over yet. Stop asking.

I’ve heard several people say that they hated David Archuleta’s performance on American Idol this past week. They thought the song was too slow and poorly re-done, but I thought that it was spot. on. PERFECT. I think it worked for his voice, and frankly, worked really well for his age. Such misty-eyed idealism sits better on young lips. And for once, I actually agree with Paula Make-Everyone-Feel-Affirmed-In-The-Land-Of-Rainbows-And-Sunshine Abdul: That was one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and one of the most moving performances I’ve ever heard. It gave me chills.

By the way, this isn’t the first time little DavidA has sung that song for a broadcast audience; he sang it, albeit in a much higher key, for the Utah-based morning show Good Things when he was thirteen. And that arrangment is (surprise, surprise) not original – you can hear the late, great Eva Cassidy singing it here.

Oscar turns 80

Feb 25th, 2008 Posted in movies, television | 2 comments »

As a movie aficionado, the Academy Awards are like my Super Bowl (and Cannes is, of course, the World Cup) This year’s show was pretty low-key overall. There was a plethora of montages, no doubt owing to the lack of writers, and so we were treated to 80 years of the Oscar’s Greatest Hits. Was it to make up for a relatively uneventful event this year? No surprises or upsets, no political platforms or hysterical sobbing. Just happy people with happy little gold statues in happy California where the sun is happily shining and the air is happily warm…not that I’m jealous or anything. With our DVR we (thankfully) skipped through most the acceptance speeches. I really don’t know or care to hear about how your third-grade teacher inspired you to greatness. Make a movie about it and then we’ll talk.

And, after all of that, I was really left with only one thought: Daniel Day-Lewis is a beautiful, beautiful man.
