the ‘just being glad’ game

My car died tonight. I had left for work and just a few minutes into the trip my lights started to fade. I called home and turned around, praying that the van would keep running long enough for me to make it home.

Nearly there, my prayers switched from “Please keep this car running…” to “Please get me home in one piece” as my headlights began to dim, then fade to nearly nothing. I made it the rest of the way by moonlight and memory of the road. It should be noted that there’s not a whole lot of moonlight on rainy nights.

Here’s the ‘glad’ part: it’s likely just the alternator, which is easy to replace. Not to mention, for a vehicle with over 200,000 miles it has given me very few problems. And not only did I make it home in one piece, I made it to work in time too.

Thanks, God.

well, well, well…

I get the house to myself for a few hours *ridiculously huge grin*

My room and all animal cages and/or litterboxes therein are completely clean, the dishes are done, and the laundry is well underway. Hannah and Stephen are both spending the night at friends’ houses and the ‘rents will be out for a few hours doing Christmas shopping.

I’m thinking, in no particular order: blankets, dinner, television, and ice cream.

Woot-woot!

We don’t have snow, or mistletoe…

But we do have presents under the tree.

Mostly.

We decided to “simplify” things this year, and put more of an emphasis on gifts that were homemade or had special meaning. Which means that instead of shopping at the last minute, we’re scrambling to put together presents for our friends and family.

Hannah wants ham steaks for Christmas dinner. For those who, like myself, had never heard of a ham steak they’re basically thick slices of ham that have been pre-cooked and vacuum packed. Apparently they’re delicious, and while they go against nearly everything I believe about food, I think we can make an exception this time. It is Christmas after all.
